Smith, Jackass, Crag Peaks Provisional
My second (of 2) I-Provisional trips for the Sierra Club. I led a group of 10 on this weekend trip. On day 1, we started from the TH and after a mile, dropped our packs and summitted first Smith Mountain, and then over to summit Jackass Peak. After retrieving our…

Santa Cruz Island
A 3-day backpacking trip. Saturday morning we took the ferry from Ventura to Prisoners Harbor. There we donned the heavy packs (no water on this side of the island!) and hike 3 miles to the primitive Del Norte Campground. After setting up and watching the foxes prowl around, we day-hiked…

Scodie Mountain
Led a group of 12 for this HPS peak via "Route 3" as defined by HPS. The ascent and descent parts were very challenging due to both the steepness and loose soil.

Red Mountain
Another HPS peak to check off the list. This is a rocky hike, but nice views of the surrounding desert environment.

2025 - Smith Mountain
Smith Mountain can be checked off the list. We hiked that one this morning. Took 4 hours, and was 6.8 miles round trip, 1700' vertical gain, topping out at a summit altitude of 5,111'. The first mile was a descent and steady incline gaining altitude fairly quick. The second and…

Tahquitz Falls
Tahquitz Canyon is one of the more culturally sensitive areas of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. Tahquitz Canyon is home to a spectacular seasonal 60-foot waterfall, rock art, ancient irrigation systems, native wildlife and plants.

Wow, Tahquitz Falls! That trail has such a calm yet powerful vibe I can almost hear the water from your post. I love places like this where nature feels sacred and raw.
I usually explore on a bike, but hikes like this remind me how grounding it is to slow down and take each step.

Thunder and Telegraph Peaks
A decent day-hike to knock out a couple of local Sierra Club Hundred Peaks Section peaks: Thunder Mountain 8,857' and Telegraph Peak 8,985'. Took the Baldy Ski Lift up to the Notch and did the hike from there.

Kern Volcanic Field Backpack Trip
This was a multi-day backpack trip, led by the Sierra Club, and what a fantastic trip. Thursday night we car-camped at Horseshoe Meadows campground, and the next morning, which was the 4th of July, we hit the trail. As we crossed Trail Pass, we dropped our packs and made the…

The monthly hike for our group was at the Puente Hills Preserve. This is the best time of year to hike this area as everything is still green from the recent rains, and the temperatures were ideal. At times the trail was pretty busy with other hikers, but with the wide paths, it's not an issue.
