Sherburn in Elmet

This is a circular tour starting and ending at the crossroads in Sherburn-in-Elmet, which I reached from Leeds with the #164 Arriva Bus.
It started with some pavement bashing along Low Street before I turned off on New Lane and then into Highfield Villas. At the bottom of Highfield Villas the public footpath was not immediately apparent to me, running between two houses as it did. It cut across a field on a tarmac path, with crops growing on either side of the path, but behind a fence, and then crossed over a rail line before reaching Mill Lane that then led into South Milford, where there was more pavement bashing until I reached Whitecote Lane. There is no footpath here, but the road is fairly quiet.
I visited Steeton Hall Gateway, which was the main purpose of this hike. After that I carried on along the road until I was able to take a path off to the right across a field growing arable crops. The path then entered a small copse, where to my delight and surprise there was a patch of bluebells. A short climb up an embankment (with steps) to cross the railway line then followed.
Having crossed the railway line, the path reached Gorse Lane, which took me to the crossroads at Newthorpe. There is a bus shelter and bus stop here. Had I studied my route in more detail I would have made the sensible decision to wait here to catch the bus back to Leeds instead of walking along the fairly busy B1222 to catch the bus in the centre of Sherburn: there really is no point in that walk, especially since the church, All Saints, was closed.
To obtain the best photos of the gatehouse, you need to be there early in the morning when the sun is lighting it up, or go on overcast day when there is no problem from backlight.
