This short hike punches well above its weight: cardio-vascular workout, enchanting views of crystal clear water falling over rocks, industrial architecture and to cap it all at this time of year, bluebells.
I reached Copley from Halifax using the #561 bus, alighting at the stop called Hollas Lane on Wakefield Road and I started recording the tour there. I stopped recording at the Copley Lane bus stop on Wakefield Road. However, I should have stopped at the Volunteer Arms, by the traffic lights, where I could have got the same bus back to Halifax. The tour is more or less circular, so if you were using a car you could park in one of the streets south of Wakefield Road.
Walking back along Wakefield Road and then southwards, I first crossed over the canal and then the River Calder before going under the railway bridge and then the climb up Hollas Lane began. At this time of year there are bluebells in the hedges along the path and on the right there is a field with a carpet of them.
At the top of Hollas Lane I turned right and then almost immediately took a path on the left. It was a bit of a stretch to get up the bank to the path at the start, but the path soon levelled out. This brought me to the asphalt Pickwood Lane that later became a path called Dye House Lane. That came to a road and I walked a short way along there before taking a path leading down into Maple Dene Clough.
At the start of the path there is a small waterfall under the bridge, just the first of several. I stayed left at the first path junction, but took the right-hand path at the second junction. I decided I would have been better using the steps to descend to the brook. There were a couple of sets of stepping stones to negotiate later, but they were no problem.
Finally, when a path went off sharp left, I stayed on the right-hand bank. The path eventually reaches North Dean Road (a track more than a road) and one of the fields on the right has a carpet of bluebells. Where the track bends to the left there is a great view of the Copley Railway Viaduct.
I crossed the Calder again at Copley Bridge, crossed over the railway line and then the canal by Copley Lane Bridge. There I was very close to the Volunteer Arms where there is the bus stop for buses back to Halifax, which seem to be every 20 minutes.
A great hike - the sun sparkling on the brook was really magical.
