Today the weather finally cleared up after constantly snowing for three full days! It took me half an hour just to dig out my car from under the snow to get on the road.
Many of the smaller roads were still pretty sketchy, and very few access roads and parking areas for nature areas had been cleared of snow. Fortunately I managed to improvise a parking spot near the Lännaskogen nature reserve for today's hike.
It was only once I got out of the city and into nature that I realized just how much snow had accumulated. There was roughly 40cm of fresh snow out there (in the open), and for much of the hike nobody had walked there before me. It was also really cold today, around -10C.
The hike went really slow and it was exhausting to push through all the snow. It was a good and challenging workout! It was even difficult to tell which direction the path was going.
After almost two hours I had made it to the lake and the sun was briefly breaking through the cloud cover. It was beautiful! I stopped to have some lunch sandwiches and hot tea, putting on an extra jacket to keep warm. There was nobody around and I had not seen anyone else on the hike so far!
I had initially planned to take a longer route around the lake, but with all the snow it was just too hard and too slow, so I settled on a shorter route, taking a shortcut back along one of the cleared local roads in the Vidja area just next to the reserve. It wasn't as pretty, but after pushing through snow for over 3 hours, it was a welcome change of pace!
It was truly beautiful to be out in the forest with so much snow, but it does come with some extra challenges!
