Kinder Low, Kinder Downfall & Grindslow Clough loop from Edale — Peak District National Park

Hiking

Embark on a moderate 9.9-mile (16.0 km) hike through the Peak District National Park, gaining 1602 feet (488 metres) of elevation over approximately 4 hours and 56 minutes. This loop from Edale offers a diverse experience, from the rocky ascent of Grindsbrook Clough, where you might need your hands in places, to the exposed moorland of the Kinder Scout plateau. You will encounter impressive gritstone formations and reach the Kinder Low trig point, which provides panoramic views over the Edale Valley and beyond on clear days.

To plan your visit, remember that this trail is considered moderate to challenging, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. The exposed nature of the Kinder plateau means weather conditions can change rapidly, so be prepared for strong winds and varying visibility. Navigation can be tricky in poor conditions, making a map and compass essential. The route is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs due to its rugged terrain, including steep sections like Jacob's Ladder.

This loop is notable for several iconic features that define the Peak District landscape. You will experience Kinder Downfall, the highest waterfall in the area, known for its unique phenomenon of water being blown upwards in strong winds. The adventurous Grindsbrook Clough ascent and the historic Jacob's Ladder, part of the Pennine Way, add to the trail's character. Starting from the picturesque village of Edale, you can find amenities like pubs for refreshment before or after your hike.

Kinder Low Trig Point

Highlight • Summit

Kinder Low trig is found on the plateau of Kinder Scout. This spot is very popular with hikers as it boasts wonderful views and is visited by many iconic trails, including the Pennine Way. Many people mistakenly believe that this trig pillar marks the summit of Kinder Scout, however, the true summit actually lies northeast.

Kinder Downfall

Highlight • Natural Monument

Kinder Downfall is the highest waterfall in the Peak District and is unusual in that during periods of strong wind it can be blown upwards! On a clear day it's a spectacular sight. Take care when approaching the edge of the waterfall as it's a long way down!

With an uncanny resemblance to Labrador dogs, this spot offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.

Grindsbrook Clough

Highlight • Gorge

This is a very scenic way to get up to the plateau! There are lots of waterfalls on the way up. The actual scramble starts out relatively gently but gets steeper and steeper as you progress, requiring you to use your hands in places. The rocks can get slippery at times, especially after heavy rain, so take care. We've done this both ways, coming up and going down, with our then 9 year old, who loved it.

The job said we had a day off in Manchester. A good opportunity to go on a tour in the Peak District National Park again. Maybe the weather will be better this time than last time in November (spoiler: no). When I asked my colleagues about our plans, a colleague had come up with the same plan independently of me …

Good hike really fun and fast beginning with spectacular views at the top, warning though. After the kinder scout peak, the path goes into a very wet bog with a complete lack of an actual path, fun but could be a dent into someone's day. Furthermore big downclimb scramble right at the end of the circuit basically

Edale, past school and church, Grindsbrook Booth, Up to Grindsbrook Clough(tough), Left to Grindslow Knoll, aimed for Crowden Head,(took a few wrong turns, admiring the wonderful views, Past Kinder Gates, Top of river Kinder(wrong turn again🙄) joined PennineWay, to Kinder Low (should followed path to peak of Kinder scout) Past Swines Back, Down Jacobs Ladder, then followed path bact Edale.
DON'T USE THIS ROUTE!!!
The part after the Kinder Low is a swamp with no visible path. We are lucky we survived.
CAUTION - The route can and does disappear along the way, so take a map/compass, and a substantial amount of common sense as each route detailed in this collection included the diversions I've taken due to local conditions or instances where I simply got lost.

A good walk and would do it in reverse if walked it again as Jacob's ladder is a killer going up. Would miss out Kinder Scout too as that was a boggy mess with disappearing paths. The rest was lovely though. A popular route :)

Very good walk, must make sure youve got the facilities for it, not for the faint hearted.
