Jim Thorpe was once a thriving coal town, which can be seen in the abandoned tunnels scattered around the hills in the area. This cavern cannot be accessed by the public.

This touring cycling route from Bowmanstown offers a dynamic ride along the Lehigh River, primarily following sections of the Delaware & Lehigh (D&L) Trail. You'll experience a mix of surfaces, from potentially unimproved rail bed north of town to smoother crushed stone, all while enjoying picturesque views of the river, tall cliffs, and the distant Blue Mountains through breaks in the lush forested areas. The trail also provides glimpses into the region's 19th-century coal mining history, making for an engaging journey.

Planning your ride, you should know that the 21.2-mile (34.2 km) loop, with 612 feet (186 metres) of elevation gain, is rated moderate and takes about 2 hours and 56 minutes. The three-mile "unimproved rail bed" section north of Bowmanstown is best tackled with a hybrid or gravel bike, as it can be narrow and overgrown, making it less suitable for road bikes or families with young children. Public access to the Lehigh River is available at Riverside Park, just south of the Bowmanstown bridge.

The D&L Trail is a significant part of the 165-mile Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, connecting various communities and historical sites. While this specific "Bridge view loop" isn't formally designated, it leverages the D&L Trail's natural features, offering numerous bridge views and opportunities to connect with other parts of the system. The presence of the Lehigh River is a defining characteristic, providing a scenic backdrop for the ride, and the varied terrain offers a refreshing change for cyclists looking for something beyond perfectly smooth paths.
