The "Ascent and return to Puig Campana (PR-CV 289)" route immerses you in a diverse landscape, ranging from shady pine forests to exposed rocky areas, culminating in the iconic summit of Puig Campana. As you ascend, the terrain changes dramatically, offering spectacular views of the Costa Blanca and the Mediterranean. It's a demanding yet rewarding experience, where the lush vegetation of the northwest slopes contrasts with the aridity of the higher zones, and the famous El Portillo cleft adds a touch of mystery to the mountain.
To plan your visit, bear in mind that this is a difficult 9.8-mile (15.8 km) hike with an elevation gain of 3236 feet (986 meters), which will take you approximately 6 hours and 9 minutes. The trail begins at Font del Molí, where parking and a water source for refilling are available. It is essential to carry plenty of water and appropriate footwear, as the final stretch to the summit is very technical with loose rocks. I advise starting early, especially on sunny days, to enjoy the tranquility and avoid the hottest hours.
Puig Campana is much more than a mountain; it's a landmark in the province of Alicante, known as "The Magic Mountain of Finestrat." The route allows you to explore this protected landscape, home to flora micro-reserves and historical elements such as the Tío Fraile stone refuge. The 360-degree views from the summit, encompassing everything from Benidorm to the Sierra Aitana and, on clear days, even Ibiza, are the ultimate reward for your effort.
